The 2026 National Youth Music Competition (NYMC) will be pianist Yu Qing Peng’s third time participating in the competition. Hailing from Sandton, Johannesburg, and currently a matriculant at SAHETI School in Bedfordview, he sees the competition as an opportunity to further develop his musicianship through the preparation and experience of performing at a high level.
At his previous two appearances at the competition, Yu Qing walked away with silver medals, along with several other prizes.
Although he does not know many of this year’s other contestants personally, Yu Qing remembers four participants from previous competitions. He says that returning to the NYMC allows him to reconnect with the competitive musical environment and challenge himself once again.
His musical journey began at the age of six, when he started figuring out songs by himself on a keyboard his mother had bought for him. Today, he studies under the tutelage of Dr Olga Tsikhelashvili and Prof Mario Nell. Music is also shared within his family, as his younger brother plays the piano as well.
While the piano remains his only instrument, Yu Qing says he admires the sounds of string instruments such as the violin and cello, as well as the organ.
His musical role model is Argentine pianist Martha Argerich. “I admire not only her artistry and expressive musicianship but also her resilience in managing challenges such as the pressures of fame and serious health issues since her early fifties,” he says.
Balancing music with the academic demands of his matric year can be challenging, but the young pianist tries to make time for as much daily practice as possible. It typically ranges from two to three hours or more each day. Outside music, he enjoys golf and tennis with family and friends, as well as computer programming.
His favourite composer is Frédéric Chopin, whose music he particularly values for its emotional depth. “His expressive lines have the remarkable ability to convey the human condition, experiences, and emotions such as longing, tenderness, melancholy, and passion,” he explains. “Through interpreting his works, I can discover and develop unique textures and expressions on the piano.”
After completing his education, Yu Qing hopes to pursue a career in technology and eventually become a director of a technology company. At the same time, he hopes to maintain a balanced life and prioritise spending quality time with his family and future children.
Perhaps fittingly, if he had to choose an object to represent himself, he would choose a lighthouse, as he wishes to become a reliable source of guidance, standing firm and illuminating the path ahead.
