The sole representative from the Free State at the 2019 National Youth Music Competition (NYMC), violinist Pieter Joubert, 17, is also the concertmaster of the province’s youth orchestra, as well as the Spread the Music (SMA) Sinfonietta. He is a Grade 11 learner at the Sentraal High School in Bloemfontein.
With a mother who is a professional cellist and head of the Odeion String Quartet at the Odeion School of Music at the University of the Free State, this rising star started with piano lessons under Francois Henkins who is still his music teacher.
The music blood flows thick through his family. His older brother plays the trumpet and his younger sister plays the piano and percussion.
Pieter also plays the piano, but nowadays he prefers the violin. Earlier this year he received the Trinity Prize for the best interpretation of a Trinity exam piece in the senior division at the Bloemfontein Eisteddfod.
In less than a decade since starting playing music, the young violinist has since 2017 annually been chosen as the best senior string player at the Bloemfontein Eisteddfod. In the same year, he performed as a soloist with the Free State Symphony Orchestra during their concerto festival.
Over the past three years, he was selected as a member of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. He furthermore participated in the Gauteng and Franschhoek Chamber Music Festivals.
His favoured composer is Camille Saint-Saëns as the in the composer’s music amazes him.
Apart from his stints at various music festivals, Pieter is a cadet player in the Free State Symphony Orchestra. He conducted the school choir for a KykNet television competition and was part of a school play for the ATKV Tienertoneelkompetisie.
Pieter entered the NYMC to challenge himself and for the experience.
