Flautist Kate Watson, 19, from Sandton is also a pianist and is a soprano who studied voice with revered South African soprano Emma Renzi.
The rising star is currently a second year BMus student at the University of Pretoria. Starting to play the piano at the age of six, her first music teacher was Rina Dippenaar. She currently studies the flute with Anna-Maria Vermeulen.
Although her parents are not involved in music, Kate has a mezzo-soprano twin and an older brother, who is a professional chorister and pianist in Australia. She started playing the piano when her grandmother gave her piano to the family. Her parents thought her playing always sounds pleasant and enrolled her for lessons outside school.
According to her, it is very difficult to choose a favourite instrument. She is on similar levels for all of them and is enjoying exploring each instrument.
The young flautist practices a minimum of three hours per day for both flute and piano. Her achievements include winning the 2012 SASMT music competition in the Primary School category for flute and she also participated in the 2016 Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. Kate also earned a diploma award in the Johannesburg Festival for the Advancement of Music for her flute recital in 2017.
In 2019 and 2019 she was the winner in the Pretoria Eisteddfod for the U18 and Open Woodwind recital categories respectively. Kate is the principal flautist of the University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra.
Her motto in life is to be kind, positive and accepting of others. As if her music studies are not keeping her busy enough, the rising star likes reading, writing short stories and drawing.
Kate entered the National Youth Music Competition (NYMC) as “the NYMC is a prestigious competition and it has been one of my goals to enter this. I am looking forward to it as I think it will be a wonderful musical experience”.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is her favourite composer, saying she always enjoys the expressiveness of his melodies.
On completion of her studies at Tukkies, the talented musical all-rounder wants to travel overseas to further her music studies and to perform her music.
